You aren’t able to choose your family, but fortunately, you are able to choose what you do with your family! August is Family Fun Month. Summer is winding down, school is about to begin once again, so why not make the most out of the month and create long-lasting memories with your loved ones?

Summer always seems to go by too fast; there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day for vacations, ice cream shop visits, and not to mention sleep. Luckily for you, we have created a list of fun activities for each day of August to enjoy those last bits of summer playtime before the busy school season begins again!

  2. Make a family garden. Nothing brings a family together like farm-to-table food! Check out what is in season and plant for the fall.
  3. DIY craft projects. Think of things you and your family members could use around your house to make your life easier. Whether it be a new corkboard to manage family schedules, etc. or storage bins for organizational purposes, the possibilities are endless!
  4. Make breakfast together. Start your day off right with a hearty breakfast! Make a list of your favorite breakfast items and shop local!
  5. Create your own bubbles. Get outside and have some fun! Check out this easy recipe for bubbles.
  6. Have a movie night. Each family member picks out a favorite movie and randomly select two or three out of a hat to watch. Don’t forget your popcorn!
  7. Create a fort. This can be done in your living room, kitchen, basement, etc. Use chairs and blankets and let your imagination run wild!
  8. Make a scrapbook. Find fun family pictures that highlight your favorite memories and make a book using random paper scraps around your house to eliminate waste.
  9. Host a family game night. Gather your board games, card games, video games, and have a friendly family competition with prizes for each game.
  10. Go to your local beach or lake. August weather is great for fun in the sun!
  11. Go to an amusement park. Rides, games, and funnel cakes galore… This is a great bonding experience for the whole family, especially the members that need a hand holding on a roller coaster.

  13. Go shopping at your local thrift store. Why not find a funky a new outfit after donating your unused belonging?
  14. Visit your local botanical garden. Nature is a gift that keeps on giving. Share that gift with your loved ones!

  16. Go to a water park. The clock is ticking for pool activities. Go on as many water slides as possible!
  17. Go to your local library. Sometimes silence is a beautiful way to enjoy another’s company. Each family member chooses a book to read, then discuss them with each other.
  18. Have a dance party! Get your daily exercise in, have a dance battle, play your favorite tunes and dance the evening away.
  19. Visit a family member you haven’t seen in a while. Why not make a day in August a whole family affair? Go to lunch or dinner with a distant family member, or take a full family vacation.
  20. Plan a scavenger hunt. This could be done in your house, backyard, or around your neighborhood. Get your kids to put on their thinking caps and create a fun, but challenging scavenger hunt for them to win prizes!
  21. Go to a museum. Find a museum that you feel would be the most interesting for your kids. Think of art, science, history, etc.!

  23. Go bowling! A lot of bowling alleys have specials during the summer, especially for families. Find your closest one and browse their summer specials!
  24. Create a dessert. Most children (and adults) have a sweet tooth. Here is a list of healthier dessert recipes for the whole family.
  25. Bird watch in your backyard. This activity is exciting and educational. Grab a book with different types of birds and learn more about the wildlife that calls your backyard a home. You might even be inspired to create a birdhouse for them to nest in!
  26. Create a puppet show or play. Let your children’s imagination run wild. Make puppets out of old socks or gloves and set up a place for them to perform their creation.
  27. Make a lemonade stand. When life gives you lemons, squeeze them and make lemonade! This is a great way for your children to learn how to manage money, even if it is a small amount!

  29. Do yoga together. If you’ve had a long week of activities, why not slow it down with the practice of yoga. It’s great for the body and mind!
  30. Invite another family over for dinner, movies, and games. Get to know your neighbors, or make new memories with old family friends!
